Upcoming JAAC X AFB Discussion: Tavinor on Video Games

The third JAAC x AFB Discussion will be appearing next Thursday, March 2. We will be looking at “What’s My Motivation? Video Games and Interpretive Performance” (abstract below the fold) by Grant Tavinor, available in JAAC’s Winter 2017 volume, 75 (1), online here. Grant is Senior Lecturer of Philosophy at Lincoln University, NZ and author of the book The Art of Videogames. And big thanks to C. AFB X JAAC Discussions #1: Leddington on Magic

Welcome to the inaugural AFB x JAAC Discussion! We’ll be discussing Jason Leddington‘s paper “The Experience of Magic”. First, we’ll have a critical precís from James Hamilton, followed by a response. (Leddington’s paper is available here.) The paper and comments touch on many different issues, and will be of interest to those thinking about perception, deception, performance, cognitive dissonance, beliefs and aliefs, movies, depiction, as well as a host of other related phenomena. One of the new features we’ll have on the blog this year are discussions of recent articles from the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism. These will follow a similar format to the discussions on the PEA Soup blog: a critical précis by a guest, with an option for the author to respond in the post or in the comments. The first of these will appear on Thursday, September 15! We will be discussing a paper by Jason Leddington (Bucknell) called “The Experience of Magic” from JAAC’s Summer 2016 volume, 74 (3).
