Trailer for Miller’s Crossing (1990)*

This is entry #24 in our ongoing 100 Philosophers, 100 Artworks, 100 Words Series.

Philosopher: Jonathan Weisberg (Toronto)

Artwork: Miller’s Crossing (1990). Film directed by Joel & Ethan Cohen, starring Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro, Marcia Gay Harden, & Albert Finney

100 Words: What’s the rumpus? If I’d known we were gonna cast our feelings into words, I’d’ve memorized the Song of Solomon.

Well, I’m talking about friendship. I’m talking about character. I’m talking about—hell, I ain’t embarrassed to use the word—I’m talking about ethics. You double-cross once, where’s it all end? An interesting ethical question. And I’m sick of the high hat!

But maybe that’s why I like you. I’ve never met anyone who made being a son of a bitch such a point of pride. Look in your heart: we’re a couple of heels, yes we are. But I suppose you think you’ve raised hell.
