Jennifer Morton on Giorgio Morandi and Still Life Painting

This is entry #83 in our ongoing 100 Philosophers, 100 Artworks, 100 Words Series.

Philosopher: Jennifer Morton (University of Pennsylvania)

Artwork: Natura Morta (1953), Giorgio Morandi, oil on canvas.

Words: Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) was an Italian painter and printmaker who is best known for his carefully observed still lifes in which the same objects are lovingly arranged and rearranged.  In his work, I see Morandi searching for the answer to an unresolved question that gets fleetingly resolved, only to become unresolved yet again when he takes another look – a feeling with which philosophers are intimately familiar. Until the end of his life, Morandi kept returning to these same objects in his studio in Bologna, his hometown, which he never left. He found exquisite beauty in the ordinary through patience, repetition, and careful attention. #goals
