This is entry #81 in our ongoing 100 Philosophers, 100 Artworks, 100 Words Series.
Philosopher: Susan Wolf (UNC Chapel Hill)
Artwork: The Alhambra: the ruins of a palace and fortress complex, 13th-14th century, Granada, Spain
Words: Some art makes you think; some art make you feel; some art makes you see or hear more intensely. And of course much art does more than one of these things. The Alhambra (like, I gather, other Islamic gardens) stimulates and delight all the senses (well, maybe not taste) in a unified and exquisite way: the scents of the flowers, the sound of running water, the feel of the sun and the wind as one walks through halls of mosaic designs and inscriptions, the interplay between nature and human design. A wonder of the world.
