Title: Surfboard

Description: Newly minted president Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) faces international matters. This image depicts his literal standoff with the Russian president, Viktor Petrov. A surfboard stands erect between them, while a funny moment takes a dark turn. Does this symbol suggest – or poke fun at – the idea that politics is a man’s world?

  1. I was thrilled when I saw the amazing composition, watching the film. The scene is outstanding, big boys game…. Since the surrealistic artists I haven’t seen such a superb male portrait.

  2. “Everybody’s gone surfin’…
    Surfin’ U.S.A”

  3. I can’t pick the best lines to use from this one… the whole thing is perfect. 🙂

    The Ocean has its silent caves,
    Deep, quiet, and alone;
    Though there be fury on the waves,
    Beneath them there is none.

    The awful spirits of the deep
    Hold their communion there;
    And there are those for whom we weep,
    The young, the bright, the fair.

    Calmly the wearied seamen rest
    Beneath their own blue sea.
    The ocean solitudes are blest,
    For there is purity.

    The earth has guilt, the earth has care,
    Unquiet are its graves;
    But peaceful sleep is ever there,
    Beneath the dark blue waves.

    -Nathaniel Hawthorne, “The Ocean”
