Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art for Everyone

Dear Readers,

Thank you, first, for your patience. Last year, AFB’s fearless leader Christy Mag Uidhir had a heart attack and literally died. But like another Christ before him, he rose again – and like that other Christ, passed the, uh, blog on to his disciples.

[update: To be clear, Christy isn’t dead – he really did rise again and is doing well. But as far as I know, he hasn’t yet ascended.]

Welcome, Readers, to the new Aesthetics for Birds blog!

In case it’s gotten lost somewhere along the way, here’s a restatement and renewal of our mission. It is this:

Aesthetics for Birds is a blog that aims to bring people working in aesthetics and philosophy of art together with each other, as well as with artists, the artworld, and others in philosophy and the academy. We provide a place to share interests, news, and professional concerns. We hope that this will enrich the perspectives and work of our readership.

To that end, we have done some tidying and revamping, and we have some fabulous features lined up for you. Among them, we have lined up:

  • AFBxJAAC Discussions: Discussions of recent articles in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism
  • “Whispers of Power”: A collaborative art project with German artist Jörg Reckhenrich – details to come!
  • Aesthetics 101: Very brief descriptions of topics and debates in aesthetics and philosophy of art

… along with the features you’ve come to know and love:

  • 100 Philosophers, 100 Artworks, 100 Words (100x100x100): Each of 100 philosophers picks an artwork and offers 100 words’ worth of reflection on it
  • Artist and Philosopher-Artist Interviews: Interviews with artists and philosopher-artists from a philosophical standpoint
  • Roundtable Discussions: Discussions of issues in the artworld or in aesthetics
  • Guest posts by philosophers working on topics in or relevant to aesthetics and philosophy of art
  • Announcements and discussion of professional issues

If you have any questions or thoughts – or if you work in aesthetics and would like to contribute in some way to the above features, please contact me, Alex King, at: aestheticsforbirds [at] gmail.

We are excited about and looking forward to spending this next year with you! Hopefully it will be only one of many to come.

-Alex
